About Matt Tweel

A life of pottery

I studied at New England college in Henniker, New Hampshire, under Vivika and Otto Heino, two very accomplished potters. [go to his page] After four years of
studying with the Heinos, seven out of the seven private students in the group went on to become professional potters showing the motivation that Vivika and Otto gave us. I moved to Ludlow Vermont a small ski town at the foot of Okemo Mountain and opened my shop at the top of the rustic old town. I started selling and attending art shows, in addition to selling wholesale to shops along the East Coast. After 10 productive years in Vermont I moved to Southern Ohio to continue my profession of hand crafting stoneware. 40 years later, I am still enjoying and thriving in my craft. I have mastered the technique of reduction firing, which means at a certain temperature the dampers in the gas kiln are closed, which then forces the flames to consume all of the oxygen from the iron in the clay to stay alive. The outcome of this technique gives a whole new texture and color to the finished pot which had been fired to 2500 degrees. The pot must then cool for two days and unload the finished pots. I specialize in functional items like the magic pot, a covered casserole dish
you can use in the oven for cooking all types of dishes to perfection, coffee mugs, bowls, bottles, colanders, clocks, oil lamps, electric lamps, soup cups, wine goblets, and any custom orders you may want. I use a blue glossy glaze, a semi-matte glaze, a matte glaze and a dark brown glossy glaze as shown in the photos.
I sell all of my art work from my shop on Division Street in Proctorville,
Ohio, at the Huntington Museum of Art, the Red Caboose and several other
gift shops. Custom orders are taken and I would be glad to have anyone stop
by.
